One Island, One Ocean
Our mission
One Island, One Ocean connects people with the ocean and one another through exploration, research, and learning, creating a community united by discovery and empowered to make a difference.
Exploration that expands our understanding
One Island, One Ocean sails the oceans on expeditions to conduct scientific research and share that information with major research institutions and with students through live and streaming online classes.
In 2009 and 2010, the first Around the Americas expedition completed a 31,000 mile circumnavigation of North and South America.
In 2025 and 2026, One Island, One Ocean completed the journey again, sailing more than 32,000 miles. Our crew collected scientific data, worked with researchers, visited coastal communities and shared the experience with students globally.
Separated by 15 years, these voyages offer a valuable perspective on changes in ocean conditions and marine ecosystems. They remind us that we all share one connected ocean.
We are continuing to do expeditions to learn more about the health of our oceans and to help create the next generation of ocean stewards.
Science in service of our ocean
In collaboration with major research institutions our expeditions gather information from remote areas, including:
- The first pole-to-pole study of floating bull and giant kelp from Alaska to Patagonia
- Ocean heat flux temperature measurement
- Wave studies
- Weather data collection
- Current measurement
- Atmospheric research
- Whale identification
Findings are openly shared to support research, education and action.
A living classroom without walls
Our free education platform has a global reach of more than 1.5 million students.
We bring real ocean exploration and active research into classrooms and learning spaces worldwide, offering:

- Connection with scientists and crew members
- Live programs and interactive resources
