Happy world environment day!๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒฑ

This year calls for action to #beatplasticpollution

Soโ€ฆ how does plastic pollution impact whales?๐Ÿ‹

Whales absorb harmful toxins like PCBs and microplastics from polluted oceans and the food they eat. These come from industrial waste, untreated sewage, and plastic pollution. Such toxins can weaken immunity, disrupt hormones, harm reproduction, and pass from mothers to calves. Long-term exposure may cause cancer and organ damage.

Plastic waste also poses a direct threatโ€”whales and other marine animals can ingest it or become entangled, leading to injury or death.

Protecting whales is essential for ocean health. They help move nutrients, support marine life, and keep ecosystems in balance.

To better understand and mitigate these threats, BC Whales, North Coast Cetacean Society (NCCS), is conducting vital research and protection efforts along the coast of British Columbia. In collaboration with coastal First Nations communities and conservation partners, NCCS uses non-invasive acoustic monitoring to study whale behavior, habitat use, and population dynamics.
