The Around the Americas expedition is collaborating with BC Whales!πππ
The ATA crew will collect data about the whales we encounter on our journey around North and South America.

The North Coast Cetacean Society (NCCS/BC Whales) was founded in 2001 and is a non-profit, charitable whale research organization that has dedicated the last 24 years towards research, education, and the protection of whales along the north and central coasts of British Columbia (BC). Our objective is to better understand the seasonal distribution, abundance, social dynamics, and threats currently faced by cetacean species at risk through dedicated research projects and non-invasive data collection conducted from land-based research stations and on dedicated marine surveys. Our marine and land-based survey efforts are designed to identify potential habitats of importance for fin whale, humpback whale, and orca populations. The data we gather additionally informs the development of mitigation measures to reduce significant threats to whales including entanglements, vessel strikes, and the impacts of anthropogenic ocean noise. We recognize the importance of robust scientific research alongside community outreach to have tangible impacts on protection of habitat for whale species at risk, and as such we have designed NCCSβs outreach program to encourage community-led stewardship through personalized data collection that is shared with each relevant coastal community within our broad research area.
